Gail Behrmann is a Johannesburg based artist, who works from her studio at The Bag Factory. She studied with Bill Ainslie at the Johannesburg Art Foundation.
Behrmann’s work has progressed from landscape and representational to abstract, with insight from the Tang poets as interpreted by Witter Bynner and Kian Kang-Hu.
In addition to fine art, Behrmann is an archive researcher and has been involved in theatre productions for the Handspring Puppet Company and William Kentridge’s video installations. Other projects include assisting and collaborating with Angus Gibson on video installations for museums. Although her film work is politically, historically and socially involved, the paintings, drawings and lithographs are without such comment.
