Full-time artist. Currently a Painter, mainly of portraits and figures, both from observation and out of pressure from within. Abstract Expressionist influence. Also makes Lithographs and Monotypes at LL Editions. Has worked in Printmaking, Ceramics, Weaving, Sculpture, Artist’s Books. Lionel Murcott in Pretoria in 1947. He lives and works in Johannesburg since 1978. Murcott obtained his BA degree majoring in Fine Art and English at the University of Natal in 1970, he subsequently studied art full time at the Johannesburg Art Foundation. His extensive travels in Europe during his early career have extended and accelerated his learning.

He is informed again and again by human figures and faces particularly their substance, their flaws and heir vulnerabilities he works both from life, through looking and registering while alternating between working from inside, from his darkness, desires and memories.
